La Bastide Clairence is located in the French Basque Country, about 30 minutes from Biarritz, the Basque coastline and Spain. It is a "bastide". The "bastides" are fortified small towns created between 1230 and 1370, in the Middle Ages, in Southwest France. By building bastides, and inviting new inhabitants to live there, the kings sought to expand economic activities and trade. La Bastide Clairence was created in 1312, by an Act of the King of Navarre who reigned in Pamplona (Spain).
La Bastide Clairence has kept its original lay-out and charm and has been selected as one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France", ("Most Beautiful Villages of France"). While it has preserved its appeal and continues to celebrate its rich history, La Bastide Clairence today has a dynamic population, which actively looks to a rich future.
The village invites you to discover its treasures, sometimes hidden, may they be architectural, artists' shops, cuisine, or beautiful panoramas.
